The protection of Special Nature Reserve "Peštersko polje"
The Government of the Republic of Serbia at its session held on December 30th, 2015 adopted a Decree on the designation of the Special Nature Reserve "Peštersko polje", declaring it a protected area of category I, that is, an area of both national and international significance.
"At the area of Pešter plateau, under specific climatic, edaphic, orographic, hydrographic and other conditions, there has been formed a unique complex of marsh, swamp and peat bog habitats surrounded by other mesophilic and dry habitat types. Within these, the relatively well-preserved habitat types, there has been recorded a high diversity of flora and fauna with numerous protected, rare and endangered representatives, some of which are recorded only in Serbia and nowhere else in the world. Besides an expressed biodiversity, this area is characterized by specific geomorphological, geological, hydrogeological, hydrological and climatic phenomena, characteristic physiognomy of the landscape, as well as by well-preserved traditional, authentic and autochthonous way of life. In addition to these facts, this area is due to its international importance listed in the "Important Bird Areas in Serbia", "Internationally Important Plant Areas ", "Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance" (Ramsar Convention), "Prime Butterfly Areas" and "Emerald ecological network" (RS 0000037)", says, among other things, the proposal to launch the protection procedure of Peštersko polje, which is contained in the Study of the Institute for Nature Conservation of Serbia
As stated in the Decree of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, among numerous relict, endemic, rare and endangered, nationally and internationally important species of flora and fauna of SNR "Peštersko polje", there are Menyanthes trifoliate, Pedicularis palustris, Utricularia minor, whose only remaining habitat in Serbia is Pešter, Crex crex, Asio flameus, Triturus alpestris, a stenoendemite of this area, Bythinella pesterica, ten beetle species, two species of water mites, two species of freshwater snails and six species of freshwater mussel fauna of Serbia known only in this region, 39 plant communities of peat, swamp, water, meadow, pasture, forest and sporadically ruderal vegetation. This protected area is also characterized by a number of geomorphological features, such as limestone hills, sinkholes, frosty grass mounds-earth hummocks, frost affected peat surfaces, solifluction terraces, grass rings, migrating turfs and karst depressions.
Special Nature Reserve "Peštersko polje" is located on the territory of the Municipalities of Sjenica and Tutin, stretching over an area of 3117, 97 hectares, with established protection regimes II and III. The management of this reserve has been entrusted to "Tourist organization of Sjenica".
The Decree on Protection of SNR "Peštersko polje" came into force on January 7th, 2016.
