20 years of ecological studies at the Department of Biology and Ecology of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Novi Sad

20th anniversary of ecological sciences at the Department of Biology and Ecology was celebrated on January 28, in the Central University Building, in the year of marking half a century since the establishment of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Novi Sad. The event was organized in order to present the most important points in the development of the Department and the research and teaching potential of departments and laboratories in which students, in addition to the study process, get a chance to develop research spirit and scientific thought.

The event was opened by welcome speeches by prof. Goran Anačkov, PhD, Director of the Department of Biology and Ecology, Milica Pavkov Hrvojević, PhD, Dean of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Novi Sad, prof. Vladimir Galić, Provincial Secretary for Urban Planning and Environmental Protection, Danko Jović, MSc, Head of the Institute for Nature Conservation of Serbia’s Unit in Niš, and Marina Tomić, MSc in biology, Acting Director of the Institute for Nature Conservation of Voivodina Province.

In his welcome speech, Danko Jović, MSc, Head of the Institute for Nature Conservation of Serbia’s Unit in Niš, pointed out that “the multiyear cooperation between the Institute and the Department has been carried out by employing and outsourcing biologists at the University of Novi Sad who develop and implement the methodology and practice of nature protection at the Institute, while, at the institutional level, the cooperation with the Department of Biology and Ecology, as one of eight strategic partners, is realized through national project such as the establishment of the Ecological Network of Serbia and the drafting of Red Lists and Red Data Books”.

After the welcome speeches, alumni – former students of the Department of Biology and Ecology, addressed the audience in order to inform them about their professional employment following the completion of their studies, which was followed by a speech by the president of the Scientific Research Society of Biology and Ecology Students “Josif Pančić“, who presented the activities of the Society.

Scientific and educational achievements of the Department were presented by Snežana Radulović, PhD, and Olivera Bjelić-Čabrilo, PhD, who spoke about the work of the Department, Branko Miljanović, PhD, who presented the tradition of hydrobiological research at the Department, Zorica Svirčev, PhD, held a presentation on the laboratory for paleoecological reconstruction (LAPER), Ante Vujić, PhD, who spoke about the results of work in the field of ecological networks and Dimitrije Radišić, MSc, who talked about the Red Lists and Red Data Book of Birds.

A panel discussion was held in the second part of the event on the topic: The Impact of Mini Hydro Power Plants on Nature, moderated by Snežana Radulović, PhD. Introductory presentations were held by Ratko Ristić, PhD, Dean of the Faculty of Forestry of the University of Belgrade, and Saša Branković, MSc, ichthyologist at the Institute for Nature Conservation of Serbia’s Unit in Niš. Predrag Simonović, PhD, from the Faculty of Biology in Belgrade participated in the panel.

The panel discussion represented a model for the general public to get informed about the current activities in the field of ecology and nature conservation.
