Monitoring of the state of wild species and habitat types
According to the Law on Nature Conservation, monitoring of the state is the planned, systematic and continuous monitoring of the state of nature, that is, parts of biological, geological and landscape diversity, as part of a comprehensive system of monitoring the state of environmental elements in space and time. The Institute for Nature Conservation of Serbia is one of the state bodies taking care of strictly protected and protected wild species, among which are also the managers of protected areas, public forest management companies and users of hunting grounds and fisheries. The Institute is also obliged to plan and implement measures and activities related to the monitoring and management of the strictly protected and protected wild species populations. In addition, the Institute keeps records on the manner and extent of use, as well as on the threat factors to protected and strictly protected wild species for the purpose of identifying and monitoring the state of their populations, which includes wild species, the use of which is regulated by the Law on Game Animal and Hunting ("Official Gazette of RS", No. 18/2010) and the Law on the protection and sustainable use of fish stocks ("Official Gazette of RS", No. 128/2014 and 95/2018-another law)
Monitoring of the state of ecological network, which includes monitoring of the state of habitats of wild species populations and habitat types of special importance for conservation is being carried out by the Institute for Nature Conservation of Serbia and the Institute for Nature Conservation of Vojvodina Province in cooperation with other professional and scientific institutions and managers.
Among the professional activities of the Institute for Nature Conservation of Serbia, which are defined by the Article 102 of the Law on Nature Conservation, the conservation of biodiversity is carried out by monitoring the state of certain habitats and populations of rare and endangered plant and animal species in the territory of the Republic of Serbia. Over the years, strictly protected and protected species of plants and animals have been monitored in the Nature Park "Sićevačka klisura" (Sićevo gorge) and Special Nature Reserve "Jelašnička klisura" (Jelašnica gorge). The monitoring is also being carried out in the following protected areas, namely the monitoring of the lady's-slipper orchid (Cypripedium calceolus) in the SNR Suva planina, the research on the huchen (Hucho hucho) in western Serbia, the monitoring of priority species (Natura 2000 species) of ichthyofauna in the Timok basin, the monitoring of alpine newt (Ichthyosaura alpestris) in the Vlasina basin, the monitoring of Greek tortoises (Testudo graeca) in Pčinja and in the Preševo structural basin, the monitoring of common European viper (Vipera berus) in the area of Vlasina basin and mountains Besna kobila and Valozi, the monitoring of Hermann's tortoise (Testudo hermanni) in the area of South Morava, the monitoring of little tern (Sternula albifrons) in the lower stream of the Drina river and of the common tern (Sterna hirundo) in the area of Velika Morava near Paraćin and Bagrdan, as well as in the lower stream of the Drina river, the monitoring of the owls (Strigiformes) in Serbia with control of the settling in the artificial cavities, the monitoring of vultures (Aegypinae) in Serbia, the monitoring of falcon (Falco peregrinus) and eagles in Serbia with the aim of suppressing and preventing the killing and poisoning of peregrine falcons and eagles, the monitoring of the brown bear in the Golija Nature Park, the monitoring of chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) with consideration of reintroduction/introduction potential and possibilities, the monitoring of withering pine forests in the area of Stara planina Nature Park, in the surroundings of the Jarešnik Strict Nature Reserve in the Bosilegrad municipality, and the monitoring of the withering spruce forests in the area of the Golija Nature Park, etc.
