SHORT DESCRIPTION (THE MAIN NATURAL AND CREATED VALUES)
Kamena Gora is a mountain in the southwest of Serbia. It is part of the Stari Vlah-Raška Highland of the Dinaric Serbia. It is highly elevated and clearly framed by the Lim river gorge and the border with Montenegro.
The particular value of the karst plain of Kamena Gora are underground forms of karst relief, caves, of which there are about 100 in this area (Velika and Mala Mujova pit, Petnjanske caves and Kurtova pit), as well as numerous karst springs, of which there are about 32 (Kovčica, Trajan and Badanj).
The area of Kamena Gora is home to 473 species of plants, 15 species of amphibians and reptiles, 101 species of birds and 33 species of mammals. Of the strictly protected plant species here occur: Campanula secundiflora (bellflower), Euphorbia Montenegrina (Montenegrin spurge) and Dactylorhiza fistulosa (early marsh-orchid). Much of the area is under forest vegetation (about 60%), and natural forest complexes of spruce are the most valuable and beautiful. Of the recorded bird species, of national and international importance are the following: Falco peregrinus (peregrine falcon), Dryocopus martius (black woodpecker), Crex crex (corn crake) and Picoides tridactylus (three-toed woodpecker). Species occurring in this area, Ursus arctos (brown bear) and Lutra lutra (otter) are in the category of strictly protected wild mammals.
The traditional way of life in an environment of conserved nature gives the Kamena Gora area a specific beauty. Particularly valuable objects of folks architecture are located in the hamlet of Guvnište in the form of individual or groups of residential, rural and other accompanying objects. In this area there are partially preserved remains of the Žitin monastery complex as part of the monumental heritage.
