SHORT DESCRIPTION (THE MAIN NATURAL AND CREATED VALUES)
There are 11 beech reserves in the territory of Serbia, the natural value of which is based on the typicality, representativeness, original character and conserved autochthonous community of the Moesian beech (Fagetum moesiacae serbicum). There are 6 nature reserves in Serbia with pure beech forests of the virgin forest type. These are: "Danilova kosa", "Felješana", "Kukavica", "Vinatovača", "Golema reka" and "Busovata".
Nature Reserve "Vinatovača" is located in eastern Serbia, on the Beljanica mountain, in the upper basin of the Resava river, in the valley of the Vinatovac stream. This area is at an altitude of 630-870 m, in the northeast geographical aspect, with a total area of 37.43 ha. The reserve represents a pure beech stand (Fagetum moesiacae montanum serbicum Rud.) of the virgin forest type, which has been developed under exceptionally favorable soil and climate conditions.
Individual trees are up to 46 m high, with trunk diameter of more than 1 m and approximately 200 years of age. Beech has had here optimal conditions for development, and with the increase in the number of trees and canopy, as well as due to the development of root system and significant participation in the formation of a thick layer of litter, it gradually suppressed other species, thus building pure stands.
Beech stands of virgin forest type were protected and designated as a Strict Natural Reserve in 1957. Due to its exceptional nature and conservation, in 1986 "Vinatovača" Reserve was rated as representative and a rarity for Europe by IUFRO - The International Union of Forest Research Organizations.
