Decree on the Designation of the Outstanding Natural Landscape "Ozren – Jadovnik" (“Official Gazette of RS”, No. 107/2014)

PE "Srbijašume"

Outstanding Natural Landscape "Ozren – Jadovnik" is distinguished for its conserved nature, extremely scattered relief with great dynamics of slopes ravaged by gorges and canyons of rivers and streams, vast expanses of meadows and pastures, extremely attractive landscape, as well as pronounced geological and biological diversity. The area is characterized by a specific rural environment, with valuable ethno heritage objects that reflect the spirituality and life of the population, and a valuable cultural heritage.
Among the greatest values of this natural resource are certainly the geomorphological features of the terrain. In this respect, the most prominent here are the high mountain karst of Jadovnik, the fluvio-denudational karst plain of Tičije Polje, the gorges of Dubočica and Ramović streams, and the Gradina karst are. Particularly attractive is the river gorge of Duboki potok.
Biological values of the area are expressed in the diverse floristic and faunal composition. Among the plant species, the exceptionally important are the great yellow gentian (Gentiana lutea L.), daffodil (Narcissus radiiflorus Salisb.) and the bellflower (Campanula secundiflora), which is the stenoendemite of the Lim river gorge and Polimlje, the entire world population of which is found exclusively in this area. This area also stands out as one of the centers of vascular flora and vegetation diversity, not only in Serbia, but throughout the Balkans and Europe. The international importance of this area has already been recognized, so the Ozren area has been identified as an Important Plant Area (IPA).
A significant part of the protected area is overgrown with forest vegetation. Almost all the forests occur here in the gorges and canyons of Dubočica, Lim and other watercourses, so they have exclusively protective character and are not exploited. However, their importance is invaluable for the protection of habitats of rare and endangered plant and animal species, as well as for the protection against erosion, for the generally useful functions of forests and the overall attractive appearance of the area. In the gorges, cut into the slopes of Ozren and Jadovnik, occurs a tertiary relic of the yew (Taxus baccata).
More than 100 bird species have been recorded within the protected area, and almost all of them are nesting birds. Some of the most important species are corn crake (Crex crex), griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus), golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) and horned lark (Eremophila alpestris). The insect fauna consists of two representative groups in terms of habitat conservation indicators, namely the dragonflies of the order Odonata and the Orthopterans.
Landscape characteristics are considered extremely attractive. Gorges and canyons, cut into the slopes of Ozren and Jadovnik, are practically inaccessible and give the impression of a true wilderness. The gentle slopes of Tičije Polje and almost flat and overgrown with lush grass karst plain of Jadovnik stand in contrast to the gorges and canyons. The Stari Vlah mountain type of settlements, with log cabins as the basic building form, can be found in the picturesque hamlets of this area. In addition to retaining the original appearance in most cases from the beginning of the last century, the internal structure of each of the village settlements has also been preserved. Particularly valuable objects of the folks architecture (residential and auxiliary) are located in the hamlet of Tičije Polje, which is in the procedure of protection as a cultural property. Valuable cultural monuments also add to the quality of the area: the renovated 13th century Davidovica Monastery (of great importance) and the ruins of the Mili Monastery, as well as numerous recorded toponyms (Krst, Molitva, Crkvina -Cross, Prayer, Church, etc.) that have already been protected.
