SHORT DESCRIPTION (THE MAIN NATURAL AND CREATED VALUES)
Golija Mountain is located in southwestern Serbia. It is one of the most beautiful mountains in Serbia in terms of its diverse landscapes and conserved natural and cultural values. Considerable abundance of water has made it possible for a diverse plant and animal species to survive.
The mountain has a network of streams that have cut through gorge-like valleys. The most picturesque among them are the river valleys of Studenica and Izubra. The mires and lakes, which are known in Serbian folklore as the "realm of the fays", are distinguished by their extraordinary beauty, among which are the Košaninovo and Dajićko Lake. This mountain is adorned with a vast expanse of forest cover that is a realm of Heldreich's maple or Balkan maple (Acer heldreichii) building the most beautiful and conserved deciduous and mixed deciduous-coniferous forests in Serbia. In addition to Balkan maple, this mountain is inhabited by about 1100 plant species, many of which are relict or endemic (Allysum markgrafi, Allysum jancheni, Pancicia serbica, Viola elegantula, Verbasaim adamovicii, Thymus adamovcii). Besides numerous mammalian species, such as the lesser mole-rat (Spalax leucodon), alpine shrew (Sorex alpinus), brown bear (Ursus arctos), wolf (Canis lupus) and fox (Vulpes vulpes), Golija Mt. is inhabited by almost 100 highly significant bird species: woodlark (Lullula arborea), rock partridge (Alectoris graeca), common redshank (Tringa totanus), common redstart (Phoenicurus phoenicurus) and others.
In the northern part of the Park, in the Studenica river valley, there is the 13th-century Studenica Monastery, a UNESCO-protected cultural monument.
