SHORT DESCRIPTION (THE MAIN NATURAL AND CREATED VALUES)

Grmija Nature Park is located on the eastern edge of the Greater Kosovo structural basin near Priština. Its northern boundary is the valley of Prištevka river, and the southern one consists of Mramorska, Badovačka and Gračanka rivers. The most prominent form of relief is the hill range of Butovački Breg (1095 m), which at the same time represents the water divide of rivers Prištevka, Veluša and Gračanka. The most striking geomorphological unit is the spring catchment area or the basin of Veluša river.

Due to its geographical location and climatic conditions, almost 95% of the vegetation cover of Grmija consists of deciduous forest vegetation dominated by mesophyllic beech forests and with a significant distribution of thermophyllic oak forests. This area has a rich and diverse flora represented by relict, endemic and endemorelict species - Quercus trojana, Paeonia decora, Linum gallicum and Daphne laureola. The fauna is here represented with 63 species – amphibians such as fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra), common toad (Bufo bufo), European tree frog (Hyla arborea), reptiles such as Hermann's tortoise (Testudo hermanni), Aesculapian snake (Elaphe longissima), horned viper (Vipera ammodytes), birds such as lesser spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos minori), Eurasian blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla), black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius), and mammals such as wolf (Canis lupus), European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus), red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) and others.
