SHORT DESCRIPTION (THE MAIN NATURAL AND CREATED VALUES)
Zlatibor is a mountain in southwestern Serbia, in the Stari Vlah mountain zone. It is a high plain (plateau) from which rise the slightly rounded peaks of Tornik, Čigota and Murtenica. Major part of the plateau consists of grasslands with vast pastures and small groups of European black pine and Scots pine trees. It is intersected by shallow valleys of the streams and rivers and bounded by elevations of sharp mountain forms with deep valleys and high inclinations of the terrain, mostly covered with forest vegetation.
In the relief of Zlatibor there are 32 geomorphological sites that belong to the geo-heritage, from which the attractive gorges of Uvac, Krvavac and Griža can be distinguished, as well as the stone bridge in Dobroselica. The 3 sites from this area are on the List of hydrological heritage of Serbia: the river Crni Rzav, the waterfall on Gostiljska river and the mires of Bijela voda.
The area of Zlatibor is inhabited by 1044 species of plants, 98 species of prime butterflies, 18 species of amphibians and reptiles, 154 species of birds and 38 species of mammals. The distinguished plant species are old, relict ones: alpine barrenwort (Epimedium alpinum), broad-leaved cotton-grass (Eriophorum latifolium) and common ivy (Hedera helix). The autochthonous forests of European black pine and mixed forests of European black pine and Scots pine are dominant here. The presence of strictly protected species Heldreich's pine (Pinus heldreichii) is of importance. Of great faunistic value are the Pančić’s grasshopper (Pyrgomorphula serbica) and Pančić’s cricket (Isophya pancici). The following fish species occur here, such as huchen (Hucho hucho), brown trout (Salmo trutta) and stone loach (Barbatula barbatula). Rare and endangered species of birds of prey are also of importance: griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus), the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), short-toed snake eagle (Circaetus gallicus) and peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus). Typical mammal species in this area are roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), wild boar (Sus scrofa), wolf (Canis lupus), brown bear (Ursus arctos) and otter (Lutra lutra).
The traditional way of life in the old settlements of Stari Vlah Mt. type, with log cabins as the basic building form, gives special beauty and distinguished character to the area of Zlatibor. This mountain is also adorned with immovable cultural property: the log cabin church in Donja Jablanica, the log cabin church in Dobroselica and the Uvac Monastery Complex.
