SHORT DESCRIPTION (THE MAIN NATURAL AND CREATED VALUES)
Special Nature Reserve "Uvac" is located in the southwest of Serbia, in the area of Stari Vlah Mt. It covers part of the Uvac river gorge and its tributaries Veljušnica, Kladnica and Tisovica.
This is an area of conserved geomorphological phenomena, that is, representative forms of karst and fluvio-karstic relief, which is unique by the entrapped meanders of Uvac and its tributaries, as well as by the large number of underground forms of karst relief (rock shelters, caves and pits). Of particular importance here is the Ušac cave system, the longest cave system in Serbia (6185 m), consisting of the Ušac cave, Ledena cave and Ušački bezdan (Ušac Abyss), as well as Tubića cave (798 m) and Baždarska cave (617 m).
The natural spatial unit of the Uvac river gorge is the habitat of one of the rarest vultures in our country, the griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus). About 233 individuals have been recorded here (of estimated 270), which is the largest reproductive group of this species in the Balkans. Griffon vultures have managed to survive in the refugial habitats of the canyon and gorge sections of the Uvac river and its tributaries.
Other rare and endangered birds are nesting in this area of interesting morphological, hydrological and genetic characteristics: the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), short-toed snake eagle (Circaetus gallicus), peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), common merganser (Mergus merganser), corn crake (Crex crex), Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo) and others. The fauna is characterized by the presence of rare and endangered mammals, such as: lynx (Lynx lynx), otter (Lutra lutra) and bats. The caves of Uvac are a habitat of endemic insect species of the genus Remyella and Duvalius.
